which bring with them challenges such as a lack of transparency and unused opportunities. In order to meet these challenges and enable more environmentally friendly production processes through digitalization, the Catena-X on a data ecosystem based on transparency and information protection.
The mobility industry is changing: electric vehicles are gradually replacing combustion engines, while digitalization is opening up opportunities for more environmentally friendly production and individual customer requirements. At the same time, pandemics, climate change and war are creating additional challenges. In order to achieve a successful, sustainable transformation process, close cooperation and exchange between the companies and specialists involved is essential.
One example: With the introduction of the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act in January 2023, companies will be required to take additional measures. Companies with more than 3,000 employees are now obliged to ensure that their supply chains comply with ethical, environmental and social standards. Manufacturers and retailers must know their upstream suppliers and select them sustainably - at every stage of the value chain in their supply chain. Transparency is an important basic requirement for this, which many companies are not yet able to fulfill. This information about supply chains is often based on self-reporting by suppliers and long Excel spreadsheets, which makes effective collaboration difficult.
Digital collaboration creates opportunities along the value chain
The Catena-X joint project has therefore set itself the goal of creating transparency and enabling the digital flow of information across the entire supply chain. The aim is to connect users, suppliers, SMEs, large companies, raw material suppliers and recyclers and to enable collaboration. This offers the opportunity to learn from each other and gain new insights that can lead to innovative solutions for greater sustainability and joint new business models, for example. The transparency and cross-company use and exploitation of data creates new opportunities for value creation for all members:
- Saving of CO₂: By working together, companies can analyze the carbon footprint of their supply chains and take measures to reduce it. By using digital technologies, it is possible to collect and analyze data along the entire value chain, all the way to the end customer. This data includes information on energy consumption, transportation routes and other relevant factors that contribute to the carbon footprint. On this basis, weak points in the supply chain can be identified and improvement measures introduced to reduce emissions. Ultimately, these digital solutions enable the end customer to obtain a complete carbon footprint and make more conscious purchasing decisions.
- Traceability: Traceability is crucial for the complex value creation of a vehicle. End-to-end data chains show exactly which materials, components or software were used. Until now, companies have only documented their own responsibilities and have not exchanged information with each other. Collaboration saves time and costs and improves quality management, e.g. in the event of recalls.
- Circular economy: Relevant information is recorded in a data ecosystem. For this purpose, a digital twin is created for each product, which can be used across the entire value chain. Catena-X opens up data corridors for these companies to share and retrieve information. Only by working together can the benefits of the circular economy be fully exploited. This includes, for example, fully documented product and process information, improved resource utilization and early detection of material fluctuations and bottlenecks.
Common standards and trusting cooperation
The guard rails for successful and trusting collaboration in the Catena-X joint project are formed by jointly defined standards that guarantee all partners the same rights, interoperability and sovereignty over their data. Trust between the partners is of central importance in order to ensure effective communication and collaboration. The Catena-X ecosystem is based on open source approaches that are freely accessible to all participants and thus also enables the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises. To ensure that the data infrastructure can always be adapted and expanded to meet the needs of users, continuous research and development of new technologies and standards in the consortium project is helpful.
Understanding and bringing two worlds together
A successful introduction of Catena-X requires experienced experts with domain knowledge and the willingness of companies to participate in the project. Interfaces must be created that bring the data ecosystem together with the company's systems and enable data exchange without sacrificing data sovereignty. The core services enable basic functionalities such as identity management or the administration of participants and services. Central services for data providers and data users are provided in data rooms. On this basis, specific applications can in turn be developed to solve specific challenges and requirements. Thanks to the open and multi-layered exchange between different companies, the best possible solution can be found for all parties.
The end of centralization?
Catena-X is setting new standards and laying the foundations for decentralization in a previously centralized business traffic system. Operating companies (including SMEs) will offer services and set up hubs in various countries. In this way, the onboarding of Catena-X will be facilitated so that SMEs without a complex IT infrastructure can also benefit from it.
And this is just the beginning: by using the platform, errors are identified in practice and improvements are developed and then rolled out. This not only creates an advantage for SMEs by ensuring the traceability of deliveries, but also opens up the opportunity for new business ideas in a completely new ecosystem.
Catena-X will not only revolutionize the automotive industry. Other sectors such as medical technology, industry and logistics will also benefit from this project and the standards developed. So be ready for this exciting journey - we are happy to be on board as your companion.
