Simply smart: future-proof device management in MedTech

How can the management of medical technology devices be made more efficient and secure despite increasing complexity? This question concerns manufacturers and operators alike.

In a world where medtech is constantly evolving, efficient device management is becoming increasingly important - and complex. Different development statuses of devices, outdated software and a lack of networking reduce the safety and efficiency of operations in hospitals and medical facilities. A standardized, manufacturer-independent device management system (DMS) can provide a remedy. Such an IoT platform allows medtech manufacturers and their customers to manage their devices centrally.

In order to better understand the wishes and problems of the stakeholders involved, I conducted interviews with device manufacturers, medical technicians and experts from doubleSlash as part of my thesis at doubleSlash. In this blog post, I will show you a selection of the biggest challenges and suitable use cases that clearly explain the whole thing.

Current challenges in medical technology: What slows down efficiency?

We are currently facing several challenges that affect the use and management of medical devices:

  • IT security: With the increasing networking of devices, the risk of cyber attacks is growing, which is why the responsible IT departments of institutions are absolutely dependent on secure solutions.
  • Actuality: Outdated devices make it difficult to integrate modern solutions and increase the security risk.
  • Connectivity: Only a few devices are currently fully networked, which makes efficient management difficult.
  • Different system maturity levels: Different levels of development of the DMS make standardized management difficult.
  • High software density: More software in medical devices means more administrative work in healthcare facilities. Maintenance often has to maintain several DMSs.
  • Communication: To ensure smooth processes, there is a need for improvement in communication between manufacturers and institutions.

Practical use cases: how we make medical technology future-proof

Specific use cases were defined to meet the identified challenges:

  • Manage remote access: The hospital's IT department retains control during remote access and can view the corresponding log files.
  • Perform system integration: The integration of third-party systems such as SAP, Salesforce and TeamViewer must be secure and seamless.
  • Define the scope of maintenance and responsibilities: Maintenance plans should clearly define the necessary scope of maintenance and the technicians responsible.
  • Perform OTA updates: Device manufacturers can update linked devices over-the-air. We already use a proven solution for OTA updates: our Update Manager.
  • View device location: Users can view the exact device location in the system. Large facilities in particular benefit from this.
  • Enable self-service: Authorization of on-site technicians to carry out certain maintenance and updates independently.

Manufacturer-independent DMS: the advantages at a glance

Advantages for device manufacturers:

  • Improved customer loyalty: An efficient and reliable management system makes the day-to-day work of device manufacturers easier.
  • Reduced costs: Fewer on-site visits thanks to remote access for troubleshooting. Development costs and for in-house software solutions are also eliminated.
  • Better data analysis: Insights into device performance and usage patterns help to optimize your own products.
  • Increased compliance: Easier compliance with legal requirements and documentation requirements. 

Advantages for the maintenance of the institutions:

  • Time saving: All devices can be managed on one platform.
  • Error reduction: Standardized processes minimize sources of error.
  • Faster problem solving: Remote access enables prompt support and analysis.
  • Centralized data management: The central availability of all device information makes it easier to manage the devices and analyze their data.
  • Improved device availability: Proactive maintenance reduces downtimes and extends the service life of the devices.

Conclusion

A manufacturer-independent DMS for medical devices is a further step towards improving the safety and efficiency of the future medical technology infrastructure. The interviews have revealed valuable insights into the status quo and current requirements. Now is the time to put these insights into practice and jointly shape the future of MedTech design.
