Gaia-X - A basis for the next generation of data infrastructure in Europe
With the Gaia-X initiative, representatives from business, science and politics are developing a basis at international level for the next generation of data infrastructure in Europe: an open, transparent and secure digital ecosystem in which data and services can be made available, collected and shared in an environment of trust. Gaia-X has the task of introducing a framework for control, governance and a common set of guidelines and rules that can be applied to cloud/edge technologies.

International Data Spaces Association (IDSA) - Global standard for IDS and interfaces
The IDSA association was founded with the aim of establishing a global standard for international data spaces (IDS) and interfaces. It also promotes associated technologies and business models that will drive forward the data economy of the future across all industries.

The standard is achieved through a reference architecture developed by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. This provides for the organization of a data ecosystem divided into so-called international "data spaces", which are connected by connectors.
The International Data Spaces are the sum of all data endpoints from all sectors that are brought together to create value in a data economy. Within an area such as the automotive sector or medicine, we speak of a data space according to the concept of International Data Spaces.
Catena-X - representative of the automotive industry in the data ecosystem
Catena-X is a collaborative, open data ecosystem for the future of the automotive industry. The association of companies of the same name focuses on networking global players in end-to-end value chains. The Catena-X data ecosystem is intended to enable more resilient and flexible supply chain management. One example of this is the integral CO2 footprint, which can be determined and provided in accordance with the Supply Chain Act.

Differences and correlations
The separation of the associations can be divided into two stages:
Gaia-X and IDSA
With its IDS-RAM (International Data Spaces - Reference Architecture Model), the IDSA association defines a model for the architecture of a data ecosystem. In a similar form, Gaia-X implements the model of the data ecosystem, divided into data spaces, as a core element. Gaia-X is working on the development of a competitive, secure and trustworthy data infrastructure for Europe. The infrastructure and data ecosystems are linked by defined specifications for federation services.

In terms of security, IDS and GAIA-X both provide for trust relationships across company boundaries and enable complex service and data value chains [https://internationaldataspaces.org/wp-content/uploads/dlm_uploads/IDSA-Position-Paper-GAIA-X-and-IDS.pdf]. This can be recognized by security concepts that work with different terms but are interchangeable between the models.
Predominantly European companies from various sectors are to be integrated into the ecosystem. The IDS-RAM omits a description of the participants. The focus here is solely on the architecture and functioning of the international data ecosystem.
Both models are based on a strong trust model. While IDS components focus on connectors as gateways for edge and cloud applications, GAIA-X is service and node-oriented and requires identity and trust systems that support security levels, trust levels, status tracking and certification approaches.
Unlike Gaia-X, the IDS-RAM does not provide for a central instance for data storage. Further detailed separations can be found in the official "Position Paper", which was prepared jointly by the associations.
Gaia-X/IDSA as the basis for Catena-X
Gaia-X and IDSA envisage a data ecosystem with data rooms from various sectors. Catena-X can be classified as one of these data spaces in the Gaia-X ecosystem. This data room is intended to represent the automotive industry.

At Catena-X, the values, principles and framework of Gaia-X serve as the basis for a data infrastructure system for the supply chain in the automotive industry.
Catena-X is regarded as a flagship project for data rooms to be used in the Gaia-X ecosystem.
It is important to distinguish not only the three institutions, but also their use of terms in relation to components of their system. There are differences, but also overlaps that need to be distinguished from one another. One example of this is the connectors that are used in the respective models.
Connectors - Eclipse Data Space Connector (EDC)
With the central component, the Eclipse Data Space Connector (EDC), a communication component for Catena-X was created. EDC implements the IDS standard and relevant protocols in connection with Gaia-X.
The IDS architecture model also describes the use of connectors. The difference between the EDC and the connectors within the IDS model is the division of communication into a transmission channel for the metadata and one for the actual data exchange. The data channel supports various transmission protocols via so-called data plane extensions. The metadata is transmitted directly via the EDC interface, while the actual data exchange then takes place via the corresponding channel extension. This enables highly scalable data exchange.
