What happened?
Hello #FrontendFriday-Reader:in,
A blog post from Google - actually intended for Google I/O 2025 at the end of May - accidentally went online too early. It was deleted shortly afterwards. But by then it was too late: screenshots, details and new UI elements for the biggest Android redesign in years were already in circulation. The leaked redesign goes by the name of Material 3 Expressive. And it does things differently.
What users can look forward to
Google has 18,000 users surveyed and 46 studies conducted - with one goal: an interface that guides you intuitively, appeals to your emotions and makes your everyday life easier.
The highlights at a glance:
- Find what you're looking for faster: Google promises that you can use important functions four times faster recognize.
- More accessibility: People over 45 should also be able to use the new UI just as intuitively as digital natives.
- A UI that talks to you: Colors, icons and animations are more emotional and dynamic - without being overwhelming.
- New status bar: Icons for battery, WLAN and network not only look different - they also react to charging statuses, e.g. by changing color.
- Customizable geometryNew shapes for app icons, such as "four-sided" or "seven-sided" designs, offer more customization options.
- Revised appsSystem applications such as the clock app have been given a new layout with slimmer navigation bars and customized icons.
These are just a few of the many changes introduced with Material 3.
